Endometriosis is a condition where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside of it, causing pain, inflammation, and sometimes infertility. Many women go years without a diagnosis, often mistaking their pain for normal menstrual cramps.

Symptoms

  • Painful periods (dysmenorrhea)

  • Pain during sex

  • Chronic pelvic pain

  • Pain during bowel movements or urination

  • Heavy bleeding or bleeding between periods

  • Infertility

Diagnosis

Diagnosis may include:

  • Detailed history and symptom discussion

  • Pelvic exam

  • Imaging such as ultrasound or MRI

  • Laparoscopy, a minimally invasive surgery, for confirmation

Treatment Options

  • Pain Management: Anti-inflammatory medications

  • Hormonal Therapy: Birth control pills, IUDs, or hormone-suppressing medications

  • Surgery: Laparoscopy to remove endometrial tissue

  • Fertility Support: Specialized treatments if pregnancy is difficult

Living With Endometriosis

Endometriosis can significantly affect quality of life, but with the right treatment plan, many women find relief. Early diagnosis and comprehensive care are key to managing symptoms and protecting fertility.
