The Best Birth Control for Heavy Periods with Miami Women’s Center

If your period feels like a crime scene every month, you’re not alone. Heavy periods (also called menorrhagia) can be exhausting and disruptive. Fortunately, certain birth control methods can lighten your flow and reduce symptoms.

Top Birth Control Options for Heavy Periods:

  1. Hormonal IUD (Mirena, Kyleena, Liletta)

    • One of the most effective options for reducing heavy bleeding.

    • Over 90% of users experience significantly lighter periods, and some stop menstruating altogether.

  2. Birth Control Pills

    • Combination pills regulate cycles and often reduce flow by 40-50%.

    • Can also lessen cramps and PMS symptoms.

  3. Birth Control Shot (Depo-Provera)

    • Many users experience lighter or no periods after a few months of use.

    • Some may have irregular spotting before periods disappear.

  4. Birth Control Implant (Nexplanon)

    • Can make periods lighter or stop them completely.

    • However, some experience irregular bleeding in the first few months.

  5. Progestin-Only Pills

    • A good option for those who can’t take estrogen but still want period control.

Other Treatments for Heavy Periods

  • NSAIDs (Ibuprofen/Naproxen) – Can reduce flow by 20-30%.

  • Endometrial Ablation – A non-hormonal option for those who don’t plan to have children in the future.
