Birth control is often associated with preventing pregnancy, but it also has a major impact on your menstrual cycle. Some methods make periods lighter or more predictable, while others stop them altogether. Whether you're thinking about starting birth control or switching methods, here’s what you should know.
How Different Birth Control Methods Affect Your Cycle
Combination Pills (Estrogen + Progestin) – Can regulate cycles, reduce cramps, and lighten bleeding. Some allow you to skip periods entirely.
Progestin-Only Pills – May cause irregular spotting or stop periods altogether.
IUDs –
Hormonal IUDs often make periods lighter or eliminate them.
Copper IUDs can make periods heavier and more painful for some women.
Birth Control Shot (Depo-Provera) – Often stops periods, but some experience irregular bleeding.
Implant (Nexplanon) – Can cause unpredictable spotting or eventually stop periods.
Is It Safe to Skip Periods on Birth Control?
Yes! Many doctors agree that skipping periods with hormonal birth control is safe. It can even help with conditions like endometriosis, anemia, and painful periods.
If your birth control is causing irregular bleeding or unwanted changes in your cycle, talk to your doctor about adjusting your method.
